1890 NEW YEAR’S LETTER

Emden, around 1890 new year’s eve.

Loved parents!

The first morning of a new year arrived once more. With a grateful heart I recall today of all the love and loyalty, received by you, loved parents, during the passed year. Each day I received from your hands gifts and favours in abundance. You exhort me to all good, adverting of all the evil and always stimulating and orienting to virtue through your example. From the bottom of my heart my deep gratitude for this kindness. Many times pitifuly I rewarded you with ingratitude the loving worries from you and wasn’t so obedient and hard-working as I could have been. This shall improve on the new year with God’s help. From today on I’ll do everything I can with zeal for accomplishing with happy obedience to your desires and to study hard, for becoming a skillful and correct person for you to rejoyce with. May God with His protecting fatherly hand keep you from all evil on the new year. I’ll ask Him every day, to give me luck and joy and to give me strength to prove my good purposes through my acts.

On the joyful hope that God in heaven shall allow that all my wishes for you, dear parents, shall come true in the next year, I stand with affectionate love.

Your grateful son
